Let the Octoberfest begin..

First of all, do you know about the Octoberfest? Octoberfest is the world's largest fair held annually in Munich, Bavaria, Germany. It was all started when Crown Prince Ludwig and Princess Therese marriage on October 12, 1810. The citizens of Munich were invited to attend the festivities held on the fields in front of the city gates to celebrate the happy royal event. The fields were named Theresienwiese ("Theresa's meadow") in honor of the Crown Princess, and have kept that name ever since, although the locals have since abbreviated the name simply to the "Wies'n". Dancing, foods, beer and horse racing enliven this festival, and by 1960 onward, the Oktoberfest had turned into an enormous world-famous festival. 

Located at the Ground Floor of Shangri-La Hotel, Jakarta, this chic and modern environment restaurant is celebrating the Bavarian culture with a range of German cuisines. German is a land full of culinary delights, it was rich, substantial and delicious, with each region having its own specialty dishes and traditional cuisine. 

German cuisine has often been labeled as stodgy and fatty, which can be attributed to the lack of variety in the rural German countryside. But Germany has benefited from a close association with Italy and France and adopted many of their spices and cooking methods, always with a German twist.

Well, you don't have to be German to enjoy the German food! Satoo invited us to enjoy the extensive options of delectable traditional German cuisines, including Goulash soup, Roasted duck a la Kreuzberg, Chicken Schnitzel, Beef roast, Wild mushroom ragôut and many more. This German Food Festival available from 5 to 27 October 2013.

At this award-winning restaurant, Satoo, you will be indulged by its sleek, modern and minimalist environment. They successfully bring the calm and wonderful atmosphere with their interior design and decoration.  

For your information, the man behind Satoo's German Festivals' delicacies cuisines is Shangri-La Hotel Jakarta's Executive Sous ChefGeorg Hessler. Born and raised in german city of Hamburg, his culinary journey was started at his grandparents' bakery. His thirst and persistence about culinary world makes him from being a baker and a butcher to the role of a respected chef. Georg's knowledge and experience makes him entrusted to lead the chefs to make this German Food Festival could happen.

Jamu are herbal remedies without additive chemical materials with roots in ancient Indonesian medicine. Jamu uses many kinds of natural herbs and spices. There are around twelve types of Jamu which are offered, ranging from Kunyit Asam and Beras Kencur to Jamu Paitan, Cabe Puyang and many more.

On this German Food Festival, you can find a diverse kind of German dishes from appetizers through desserts. You can find nordeekrabben (grey Shrimp) salad with Matjesfilets Housewife Style through bayerische Leberknoedel on the appetizers' menus;  Beef Sauerbraten with Braised Red Cabbage, Roast Duck with Braised Red Cabbage and Kartoffelkloesse, Salmon with Parsley Potatoes and Lemon Beurre Blanc, Oven - Baked Suckling Pig and many others for the main course.

Well, Octoberfest is known for their festive atmosphere and beer, you can choose the bottomless Heineken for IDR 220,000 ++ or German Beer Bucket Erdinger Champ for IDR 300,000 ++.

For me, the most interesting part on Satoo's Germang Food festival is their desserts corner. You can find Rote Gruetze, Zuckerkuchen (sugar cake with caramelised almonds), Apfel and Zimt Streuselkuchen (apple and cinnamon crumble cake), Eierscheke (egg cake), Kirschmichel (cherry pudding), Guelph Pudding with Wine Foam and Quarkkeulchen with compote .

To tell you the truth, this is my first time to eat Apple Strudel. I am having heard that apple strudel dough is so thin and elastic. The preparation is very difficult, they have to spread the dough as wide as it can so the dough is so thin and transparent. Cooks say that a single layer should be so thin that one can read a newspaper through it. After that, they put the fillings and start to rolling it.

This difficult preparation is the one that makes me interested. Finally I can find this dessert at Satoo's German Festival and I really like it. 

I also tried the German's Chocolate Cake, Sachertorte. The cake consists of two layers of dense chocolate sponge cake with a thin layer of apricot jam in the middle, coated in dark chocolate icing on the top and sides. I really love chocolate, and when i ate this sachertorte, I drifted by its deliciousness. 

The most famous dessert from germany is nonetheless Black Forest. Black Forest cake consists of layers of chocolate cake, with whipped cream and cherries in between. The cake is usually decorated with additional whipped cream, maraschino cherries, and chocolate shavings.
Fun Facts: Black Forest cake is named not directly after the Black Forest mountain range in southwestern Germany but rather from the specialty liquor of that region, known as Schwarzwälder Kirsch and distilled from tart cherries. 
The chocolate cake was moist and fluffy, combined with sweet whipped cream and refreshing liquor distilled cherries makes this cake is unforgettable. This nostalgic cake will completes this culinary journey on Satoo's German Food Festival.

My culinary journey at Satoo that day was ended with a cup of black coffee and a small talk with Joris Satyadharma as Digital Marketing Manager Shangri-La Hotel and Felicia Setiawan as Director of Communications Shangri-La Hotel really brighten up my day.
